FAQs

  • Why buy from The Log Shed?

With the growing market of stoves & open fires there are many companies now selling firewood. Here at The Log Shed, we pride ourselves on our excellent products and are huge believers in ‘good old fashioned’ customer service. We deliver nationally throughout the UK and offer the finest quality kiln-dried logs, a range of beautiful log stores and fireside accessories.

Our kiln-dried hardwood is dried in our own heat and humidity controlled kilns on our own premises, so we are able to ensure the process is carried out correctly and that the logs have the correct moisture content of an average of 15%. Our strict quality standards do not fail. We always carry huge stocks of all our products, and we do not run out. The Log Shed has expanded through word of mouth, good quality service and a passionate team who do things the correct way.

  • What is kiln dried wood and what are the benefits?

This is a common question. Kiln drying is a process the wood goes through. The wood is dried in a heat and humidity controlled kiln. The reason for kiln drying is to improve the overall quality of the wood providing you with a low moisture content of around 15%. This provides a clean burn with maximum heat output and therefore you are likely to use less wood. The kilns are fired using the waste wood generated through processing so they are very Eco-friendly and the logs are ready to use immediately.

  • When is the best time to buy firewood?

At The Log Shed all our wood is ready for immediate burning. This can be bought any time of year to suit, however we do recommend you keep stocked up to avoid running out.

  • What weight is the wood??

This is a common question; however, you should never buy wood by weight. The wetter it is, the heavier it is. We sell wood by volume. Kiln dried wood is likely to produce twice as much heat as poorly seasoned wood and will last you twice as long, therefore far better value.

  • What moisture content should I expect?

All our Logs are kiln-dried to an average of 15% moisture or lower.

  • What size can I buy?

Our standard log size is 8 inches which suits almost all fires and stoves. Some logs are 10 inches long - Pure Ash, Silver Birch and Hornbeam.

  • What should I buy for my new stove?

If you have had a new stove installed, or are new to operating a stove, we recommend Silver Birch logs as they offer easy lighting and clean burning on your new stove giving first time users all the help required.

  • I light my fire at 4pm and burn til 9pm, what firewood should I use?

Our British Kiln Dried Mix is our best seller. A mix of native hardwoods including Silver Birch for easy lighting and other hardwoods for a longer burn.

  • I burn my stove all day and night, what firewood should I use?

Oak would be our top choice! Oak is very dense, slow burning hardwood making it an economical choice for long burners. Top Tip! remember to top up with Silver Birch and British Mix to light your fire.

  • I burn for a few hours in the evening, what firewood should I use?

Either silver birch - easy to light, gets hot quickly
Ash - the rolls royce of firewood
Larch or Eco - sustainable softwood
    British Mix - hardwood
You won’t go wrong with any of the above!

The best way to store your firewood is outside, protected from rainwater but open to the air. We have designed unique Log Stores which can be viewed on our website. The stores have a covered roof. The wooden sides have spaces in between each piece allowing the air to circulate and the wood to breathe. The stores are available in small, medium, and large and we have some alternative designs – The Boat Log Store and The Circular Log Store. We also offer a bespoke service where you can have a store made to measure. Please call for further details.
